The collaborative approach in health care implies working of the health care providers together in a cooperative fashion to deliver the best possible health care to the patients and enhance the quality of health care system (Henderson et al., 2012). In this essay, the importance of interprofessional communication in health care settings, the various strategies or theories of interprofessional communication will be discussed. In this section, the overview of the interprofessional communication is done. Interprofessional communication is an important and a core nursing skill in the profession of healthcare. Interprofessional communications happen when the health care personnel interact among themselves, people with ailments along with their family members in a cooperative and comprehensive way. This kind of communicational practice incorporates trust among patients, their family members and teammates. Mutual respect is a crucial prerequisite for interprofessional communication. The dignity towards each other sets a positive environment. This helps in setting up shared objectives, crea-ting comprehensive plans, responsibilities and making decisions. Such kinds of communication rely on transparency and honesty of the conversation. The facilitation of good interprofessional communication can be done by paying proper attention and listening to the non-verbal forms of communication. It can be promoted by taking into account a generalized and brief outlining of the decisions for caring of the patients. It also involves effective utilization of information and technology sources. Interprofessional communication also accounts for negotiating, consulting, interacting, discussing or arguing on the issues for the best possible patient outcomes (Arnold Boggs, 2015). It is well documented that miscommunication or poor communication affects the patient outcomes. Incompetent communication leads to delays on treatment, diagnosis, errors in medications, abrasion and death of the patients. There has been a deficiency in the training and educational practices of nursing and other health care profession. The training regarding patient safety was not taken into the courses previously. However, with the advancement in the educational system, a systemic approach have been taken for guiding the nurses to take better care of the patient and ensure patient safety and compliance. The health care providers are now more open to the training sessions and workshops regarding the development of interprofessional communication skill in them. There are several challenges and barriers to effective communication. They are lack of confidence, inadequate experience, distraction and complications in the health care sector. It also includes improper standardization and fundamental structure. Interprofessional communications occurs through two means generally. They are synchronous means and asynchronous means. Synchronous mode implies to real time communications, which are meeting, handoff, ward round and proper conversation. Asynchronous genres include orders for medications, written notes on progression and white board notes (Foronda, MacWilliams McArthur, 2016). The education on interprofessional communication process is a collaborative stratagem. It helps in improving the students who will be the future nurses and other healthcare providers to work as a team to achieve the shared goal and respon sibility towards the humankind. Provision of appropriate training and education to the novice registered nurses would result in improves outcomes of the patients health. These training patterns are best appropriate and applicable for handling difficult medical issues and related complex matters. There are three prescribed models of interprofessional communication, which are considered critical for the students in the health care profession. The models are based on didactic program, experience based on community and experience stimulating the interprofessional communicational aspects. The study was done by three renowned universities, namely, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, University of Florida and University of Washington. The program on didactic model illustrates the significance of team works, related skills, professional knowledge, patient centred support and clinical element of interprofessional communication. The community-based program emphasizes on the ways cooperative approach of interprofessional communication affects the healthcare services, health status of the patients as well as focuses on the environmental impact on the patients health profile. The stimulation program of the interprofessional communication demonstrates the skills of the health care teams in both the formative and summative manner. This would supplement in developing the communication skills and leadership quality among the registered nurses who are new to the profession of health care (Bridges., 2011). A report on a investigative study involving the final year nursing student was made to assess the way the nurses recogniza and act to clinical placement of deteriorating patients in a simulated background. This was done to eliminate the chances of error in the nursing of the deteriorating patients. The errors are due to lack of experience and comprehensibility of the medical issue by the new registered nurses. The study inspected the depth of recognization an d identification of clinical cues by the new nurses. The aspects considered for determining cue recognizationwere initial response, recognization of cues differentially, signs acculation and diversified activities. It also imparts negative effects on the physical and mental health status of the patient resulting in progression of the ailments and worsening of the condition (MacArthur, Dailey Villagran, 2016). There are strong associations found between health care professional, their skill of communicating with the patients and the patients capability to comply with the medications and treatment procedures. Through various studies, it had been found that the ability of the nurses to properly explain, understand and focus the issues have a pr opounding effect on health outcomes from the perspectives of biological and functional profile. This will enhance the level of satisfaction and come up with good experiences of care and support. Patients perceive that the quality of health services provided to them depend on the personal interprofessional communication abilities of the health care providers. The patients are benefitted with the good interacting skill of the nurses. Hence, there is a strong connection between the patients attitude and communicational approach of the nursing staffs. It result in improvement of health outcomes and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment provided to the patients (Brock et al., 2013). Moreover, effective communication skills facilitate active participation by the patient, they are found to adhere with the given treatments as well as take initiatives to manage their health in accordance with the prescribed methodologies. However, there is a risk of adopting malpractices, which affect t he health care system along with patients to greater extent. The patients are found to be deteriorating due to poor communication by the health care providers (Riley, 2015). Hence, a good interprofessional skill is important for providing appropriate care to the patients and ensuring the betterment of their health status. The theories and strategies of interprofessional communication are discussed in this part of the essay. The improvement in patient care and safety requires good interprofessional communication. This can be done based on certain strategies. The strategies are: Setting a problem-oriented approach Clearly describing the constituents of successful health outcomes A commitment to hold the proposed plan and its accurate execution Initiation of appropriate communication plans Interventional approach to train the health care staffs from all ranks (Liaw et al., 2014). The problem-focused approach of the interprofessional communication skill emphasizes on a particular issue and does not consider the broader aspects of the matter. They emphasize more on teamwork and cooperative approach towards the patients health care. A clear definition of successful outcomes and outlining of the constituents of it typically is crucial. It results in appropriate interventional approach towards healthcare of the patients. The nursing leaders are considered to be committed towards adherence to the proposed plans. Another strategy of interprofessional communication states that a proper framework and planning should be done for initiating the communications with the patients. It also focuses on the patterns in which the communications are made. In this way, it is ensured that the various units of the health care organizations are working together; they communicate with each other, keep them upgraded with the latest information. They also insure that the challenges and limitations of the system are addressed well. In addition to that all the staff comprising of the health care system should be involved in the training sessions and promote interventional implications (Gittell, Godfrey Thistlethwaite, 2013). There are four most critical elements of interprofessional communication skills. They are situation, background, assessment and problem. Situation is the first element in which the issues with patients are analyzed properly. In the next element of background, the context or the clinical backdrop is identified. The third element is assessment, in this part of the interprofessional communication profile, the self assessment of the problem is made, and it is analyzed and assessed minutely as to know etiology behind the issue or problems faced by the patient. The last element is recommendation, where the personal opinion of the nurses is taken into account. In this part, the recommendations of the suggested methodologies for mitigating the health issue are made (des Ordons et al., 2015). There are certain interprofessional communication theories in nursing practices. These theories help the nurses by providing explanation and guidance for interacting with the patients. Mainly two theories are followed in nursing; they are Peplaus interpersonal relations theory and Dyadic interpersonal communication model (Bays et al., 2014). In Peplaus interpersonal relations theory, the focus is preliminarily on the nurse-patient relationship. In this theory, communication comprises of certain critical factors like environment, attitudes, cultural beliefs and practices (Coleman et al., 2015). The theory consists of four stages to attain a common objective: Orientation- In this phase, the patients are involved in the treatment procedure. They are encouraged to ask questions to the healthcare providers regarding the useful information and explanation of the clinical process they are undergoing. This phase enables the patient to build trust and this is the phase where the basic and first impression of the nurse is evolved. Identification- This phase involves the nurses and patients to work jointly. They give a platform for interaction, building trust and accepting each other for achieving the shared goal of better health outcome. It also involves active participation of the patient. Exploitation- It is that stage of the theory where the patients get the benefits of all the services offered by the health care staff along with exploiting the patient and nurse relationship for achieving specific treatment goals. Resolution- This is the stage where the patient and nurse relationship is considered to end. The patients needs and expectations are met accordingly, he/she becomes independent and recovers from the ailment to move ahead and lead a normal soulful life (Balogun et al., 2014). In Dyadic interpersonal communication model, an interactive process occurs between the nurse or health care provider and the patient. This model describes the recipient or patient as decoder and the health care personnel as encoder. It focuses on the factors like perception, content, and attitude, emotional and physiological aspects of the patient. This model emphasizes on the necessity and significance of trust, transparency and alertness which might influence the non-verbal and verbal means of communication (Lapkin, Levett-Jones Gilligan, 2013). Conclusion The training of the nurses regarding the communication skills is varied. The difference in the training and management results in frustrations and other such negative effects. Hence, it is suggested that the training should have a universal platform with respect to interprofessional communication style and it should be descriptive in nature. Interprofessional communications help building trust and rapport, eventually leading to affective patient-centered care and support, which implies better outcomes of patients health. The various strategies of communication and the theories involved with it are reviewed. It can be concluded that the Peplaus interpersonal relations theory can be applied to the chosen theme of the essay, good inter-professional communication is key to successful nursing. It helps in building trust, maintains dignity of the patient nursing professional relationship and is outlined by honesty and clarity. The strategies constitute of an important element of commitment towards the patient, his wellbeing and commencement of the proposed plan as planned previously.
